Joe Schall

Joining Gem Adventurer™ in 2016, Joe Schall GG (GIA) has been a gemstone professional for 31 years and is the consummate ‘Gem Hunter’ in the truest sense of the word.

Holding a Graduate Gemologist degree from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), Joe started his gem adventures in 1985 as the chief diver on an expedition for Bolivian gold deep in the Amazon rainforest.

In 1992, all roads led to Bangkok, the colored gemstone capital of the world. Heavily experienced at sourcing, buying, cutting and marketing gemstones, Joe lived and worked in Bangkok for 10 years in the heart of the city’s gem district. Here gemstone buyers from around the world visited him in his office in the Piyamitr Building on Mahasek Soi 3.

Hunting gems in numerous countries including, Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and Mozambique, Joe’s particular specialty is sourcing large carat single gems such as fine quality Rubies and Sapphires. Joe has even been featured in the JCK Magazine, a respected trade journal and authority, publishing articles on retail jewelry market information, gemology, marketing and advertising topics, as well as financial management.

As a knowledgeable and experienced television home shopping guest with compelling stories to tell, Joe not only knows the business side of the gem industry, but also has a genuine passion for gemstones and the adventures his lifestyle affords. These are the kind of stories home shopping customers love to hear, and Joe loves sharing his adventurers with the audience, as well as his knowledge of gemstones.

Joe recently spent four months at the world’s largest Ruby deposit located in the northeast of Mozambique, Africa. Covering approximately 33,600 hectares, it is believed to be the most significant recently discovered Ruby deposit in the world. A truly amazing gem adventure, Joe was contracted by the mine owner to examine and grade rough Ruby crystals coming out of the mines. He also had great time interacting with the ‘rough’ characters that mine them. For Joe, Africa is undeniably a land of contrasts. From the malaria filled bush to the incredibly rugged terrain of the Ruby deposit, Mozambique holds her treasures tightly and getting them out is not for the faint of heart!

Joe currently lives in Miami Beach with his daughter, Michelle, and his German Shepherd, Baron.
